Unwalking: Riverive —
a Hakka understanding.
Riverive means to have the nature of rivers.
Over so many years, having lost everything and rebuilt elsewhere, rooting at some other corner of the world, taking a different form of life, and living on, Hakka people are strong-minded.
Like the river. Just like the river. A river comes and goes, as water never stops.
The river would turn around, even go underground, but finally finds where it ends. To recreate this nature of the river is like representing the nature of the Hakka people.
This sound walk intends to rebuild a feeling of the Hakka people’s past and spiritual inside.
“past and now, a flow —”
Soundtrack through the map.
Dawan Shiju 大萬世居
the traditional Hakka residence.
the journey: how we start…
We will start from inside the former residence. Then to the river. Stay, listen, and come back to the old house.
Follow each part on the map, and play the sound at the coordinated position.
inside
“the initial”
inside the residence
Peaceful and original.
Now let’s cross a time that holds more than one thousand years.
From the perspective inside, we look at the Hakka life.
crossin’
“a taste”
to the river
Follow me. From the far-away peace to somewhere else.
Keep looking for something.
Keep trying to go someplace.
Crossing, trying, and getting the taste.
float
through time
by the riverside
By the water. Admire the water.
Just like the water. Water flows up and down, giving its lovers unique life experiences.
Float through the river of time.
enshrouded
down. away.
back from the river
To the mountains. To move away from bustlings.
It is a respect of esteem, they are hidden flowers far from the trunk or branches.
Enshrouded.
hope
all around for all
back at the residence
Coming over all those obstacles, it’s brave of the people to move on.
A bright new world is there, and now we are standing.
Like the water, our hope never fades out.
The river has guided us,
and we are always here to follow.
